Happy 1 year anniversary! It was exactly today that I started blogging one year ago. It’s kind of funny how I decided to blog today, after what seems like forever, without even realizing today is my blog’s one year anniversary! Life has been busy with new job and new home so I have been MIA on here! Hopefully as things settle down, I will have more time again! 🙂
As I have been so busy, I was not even aware that it was time for Dine Out Vancouver again! Fortunately, a few of my foodie friends have reminded me so I was able to book in time. I definitely feel that this event is decreasing in popularity progressively…Not sure if it’s due to the rising prices, the poor service or the drop out of popular restaurants…but I still get very excited about it every year because it gives me an excuse to go out and try restaurants I have not gone before!
Burnaby Riverway Clubhouse is one that has been on the Dine Out list for a few years now and I keep coming back because their quality has been very consistent! Their dine out menu is $40 this year and as usual, their menu choices are a great steal for the price!
Ambiance – 8.5/10. This restaurant is a hidden gem in the river district tucked away behind a commercial area. The obscure location probably explains why the restaurant was not very busy even though it was the first day of Dine Out. We were the last table that came in at 7:30 p.m. I like the fact that the tables in the restaurant are spaced out so you have your personal space to enjoy dinner. There is a fireplace in the restaurant which helps to create a very cozy feeling. It feels like you are eating inside a wood cabin which is quite neat.
Food – 9.5/10. Usually the food quality is not as great on the first day for restaurants in general during Dine Out as the kitchen needs some time to adjust to the heavier volume of customers visiting the restaurants. However, this did not seem to be the case at Riverway. Our food came very promptly and the quality was superb! The presentation of each dish was professional and artistic!
Before the appetizer was served, we were served with a bruschetta with sun dried tomatoes and cheese. It was bite-size but very flavourful. For appetizers, we ordered the short rib and tuna. The short rib was a very generous proportion and the meat was very tender. As for the tuna, proportion was also very large and the tuna was very fresh. Off to a great start!
For entrees, we got the New York Steak and the Bouillabaisse. The chef recommends the steak to be cooked medium rare and that is what we went with. The juicy grilled steak was amazing! Even the side dishes were very delicious – the potatoes were sprinkled with truffle salt and pepper and although I could not identify what veggies we were served, they were coated with butter and tasted very fresh. The Bouillabaisse proportion was just as generous and the seafood were very fresh and sweet.
The advantage of having three people is that we could try all the desserts on their menu! The passion fruit tart was very crunchy and the blend of chocolate and passion fruit was just right in the ganache so it was not too sweet nor too sour. The icy blue – vanilla ice cream – was very rich and smooth. My favourite that evening was the matcha sensation which is a combination of matcha cream brulee and matcha rice krispies. I never thought about using matcha in these desserts but they turned out to be a great match! I am going to try to make this at home next time!
Service – 9.5/10. Our host that evening was amazing as well. He was constantly checking on us, without over-doing it, to see if we had everything we needed. He had a great attitude and food was delivered very promptly.
Good to Know! – What makes this restaurant even better is that there are ample parking available. The parking lot is located right next to the restaurant. There was also an artist that evening giving out free caricature drawings. Free stuff is always nice 🙂
Riverway only takes reservations so walk-ins are not available. We saw a couple that was turned away that evening. Reservation on the City of Burnaby website is super easy and they also call you two days in advance to confirm the booking.
Overall – What can I say?!? They did not disappoint again this year! The chef has continued to wow me every year with the menu choices and the quality of their food. Book now and try for yourself!
